Unreal Engine scores muscle with an amazing Star Wars demo

Epic Games, with ILMxLAB and Nvidia surprise with Raytracing techniques in real time.

In recent days we are often talking about raytracing technology for lighting, thanks to the important presence that this technique has had in the GDC (Game Developers Conference). If Microsoft presented its DirectX Raytracing as the great graphics revolution that is to come, now it is Unreal Engine who shows with an incredible demo what can be done with raytracing.

Epic Games, together with ILMxLAB and Nvidia, have presented the incredible real-time technical demonstration of Star Wars as part of the "State of Unreal" conference, in which different topics related to Unreal Engine 4 has been discussed.

Using characters from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, the show "moves the light interactively around the scene, and the raytracing effects that include shadows and photorealistic reflections are generated in real time."

"Raytracing is a rendering process typically associated with higher-end renderers and with hours and hours of processing," acknowledges Tim Sweeney, CEO and founder of Epic Games, the fathers of the Unreal engine and, for example, the Gears saga. of War. "Real-time film quality raytracing is available with Unreal Engine, and it's exciting to see new developments for media and entertainment, as well as any other market that requires a photorealistic visualization."
